<p>These references are there on purpose.  When we pulled the message system out of 4.x, we left some of the other code so people could design their own messaging systems. Same with notifications.  If you install the default messaging/notification systems these snippets will be used. If people design their own systems, they are welcomed to use these and they will have deeper integration than normal plugins for their message counts etc.</p> <p> </p>
